Cosmetic Dermatology Q & A

What is cosmetic dermatology?

Dermatology is an area of medical practice that focuses on addressing a wide range of skin health conditions. Some of these issues include:

  • Skin cancer
  • Infections
  • Dermatitis
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Psoriasis
  • Lacerations
  • Eczema

Cosmetic dermatology is a subset of general dermatology that addresses the appearance and texture of skin. Some of the treatments available through cosmetic dermatology include:

  • Microneedling
  • Chemical peels
  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Scar reduction
  • Botox®
  • Dermal fillers
  • Kybella®
  • Removal of abnormalities like warts and skin tags

Cosmetic dermatology skin treatments can improve the texture and tone of skin, as well as correct areas of hyperpigmentation like melasma.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an injectable treatment that reduces the volume of fat cells in the area beneath your chin. It’s a great way to improve your profile without the risks and recovery time associated with plastic surgery procedures.

During Kybella treatments at Global Dermatology, Dr. Poulos administers a series of injections in the skin beneath your chin. Those injections contain a solution of deoxycholic acid, a molecule that helps your body break down and absorb dietary fat.

When injected into fat cells, synthetic deoxycholic acid destroys the structural integrity of those cells, causing them to release stored fat that’s then processed and eliminated through the lymphatic system. Once destroyed, those fat cells cannot regenerate, leaving you with less fat in the treatment area and a more sculpted profile.
